– Commences Joint Exploration, Acquisition, and Feasibility Study of Project Sites –

GATES Inc. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Yuji Sekino; hereinafter “GATES”) has entered into a Basic Agreement for Business Alliance (MOU) with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (Head Office: Osaka City, Osaka; hereinafter “Kansai Electric Power”) regarding the exploration and acquisition of project sites and the examination of business schemes for grid-scale battery storage projects. The two companies have commenced joint studies based on this agreement.

Kansai Electric Power’s Strategy for Grid-Scale Battery Storage Business
Kansai Electric Power is proactively expanding nationwide its grid-scale battery storage total support service, “Kan-denchi,” by leveraging the comprehensive capabilities of the Group. Through the development of approximately 1 gigawatt (1 GW) by the early 2030s, the Company aims to become a leading top runner in Japan.

Background of the Business Alliance
As the introduction of renewable energy continues to expand, the role of grid-scale battery storage in stabilizing the balance between electricity supply and demand is becoming increasingly important.

In implementing such projects, appropriate site selection and evaluation are required, taking into account grid interconnection conditions and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

This alliance leverages GATES’ expertise in land exploration and rights coordination within the real estate sector, together with Kansai Electric Power’s specialized knowledge in the energy business, to jointly examine the feasibility of potential projects.

Scope of the Alliance (Matters for Joint Examination)
The two companies will engage in good-faith discussions on the following matters:

・Exploration, acquisition, and information sharing of project sites intended for grid-scale battery storage projects
・Appropriate evaluation of candidate sites from technical, legal, and business perspectives
・Confirmation and advisory support regarding necessary administrative procedures, as require
・Examination of business models and allocation of roles

This alliance is structured on a non-exclusive basis and does not constitute a commitment to implement specific projects, acquire land, or make investments. Based on the outcomes of future discussions, the parties will consider the feasibility of entering into individual agreements.

Through this alliance, GATES will further deepen its expertise in the energy infrastructure sector and, while continuing discussions with related parties, will advance initiatives aimed at realizing a sustainable society.
